The Main Street Baptist Church Library serves several distinct functions. First and foremost, it is a lending library containing over 2,000 books that church members may borrow for a reasonable length of time. One-fourth of the collection is inspirational novels, and another fourth is children’s books. Over 1,000 books are non-fiction and instructional; these include biographies, church histories, devotions, counseling, and such Bible aids as atlases, commentaries, concordances, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. In addition to print media, the library contains a variety of audio-visual materials, including movies on VHS tapes and contemporary Christian music CD’s. All worship services since 1979 have been recorded and may be checked out the same as books. Services from 1979 to 2003 are preserved on audio cassette tapes; services from 2003 through 2007 are on VHS tapes; and services from 2008 to the present are on DVD’s.
Next, the library serves as a repository for a number of “keepsakes” from memorable events in the church’s past. Some of these mementos are on display in a large glass case.
Finally, with its comfortable newly cushioned chairs and conference table, the library serves as a Sunday school classroom and a favorite site for committee meetings.
